Ian Hislop has been confirmed as the presenter of the PPA awards for editorial and publishing excellence on Wednesday 3 May at London’s Grosvenor House. In their 26th year, PPA’s prestigious awards have attracted some 811 entries across 22 consumer, business and customer publishing categories.

The Economist Group’s board of directors has chosen John Micklethwait as the 16th editor of The Economist, succeeding Bill Emmott on 1 April.

United Business Media expands events presence in China

United Business Media (UBM) has announced that its CMP Asia division has expanded its events business in China with the joint acquisition of a majority stake in the Guangzhou Beauty Fair. The acquisition is being made with BolognaFiere Group, CMP Asia’s joint venture partner for its Asian beauty industry events. CMP Asia and BolognaFiere Group will also launch a new event, Cosmoprof Shanghai, with the first show scheduled for January 2007.

Regulation changes to affect animal medicine advertising

Changes in the regulations affecting the advertising and promotion of animal health medicines will be the subject of a meeting at PPA’s offices on 24 April at 3:00pm. As a result of the legislation, which will remain under review, the National Office of Animal Health (NOAH) will present its Code of Practice to publishers.

UK ad spend rises 2.1 per cent in 2005

Advertising AssociationAdvertising expenditure in the United Kingdom rose by 2.1 per cent between 2004 and 2005 according to figures published this week in the Quarterly Survey of Advertising Expenditure, researched and compiled by the World Advertising Research Center (WARC) on behalf of the Advertising Association (AA).

United Business Media expands its presence in India

United Business Media (UBM) has announced a number of initiatives to expand its presence in India. UBM’s healthcare division, CMPMedica, has acquired a set of assets from Mediworld Publications, an Indian medical publisher.

DMGT reports strong growth in business divisions

The Daily Mail and General Trust (DMGT) has released a trading statement updating investors on the group’s progress in the current year, ahead of its half year end on 2nd April 2006.

The Group reports that businesses-facing divisions are seeing good growth in revenues and are finding new opportunities while consumer-facing divisions have seen continuing difficult conditions. Overall, the Group remains on track for a satisfactory year.

VNU agrees to public offer from private equity group

VNU N.V., the global information and media company, and Valcon Acquisition B.V., a holding company newly incorporated in the Netherlands, have announced that they have agreed to a public offer for VNU that values the company’s equity at EUR 7.5bn, or EUR 28.75 per common share.

Richard Bush, managing director of Base One made the case for brand marketing while Russ Cohn, head of B2B vertical markets at Google championed search marketing.
